Opera Oz's Modern Day MeetUp: "Real" Barber and "Singing" Barber of Seville

We're all about cross promoting opera, as long it exposes new people to the art form and it maintains a reasonable degree of integrity. One of our favorite cross promotions that we've seen lately is Opera Australia joining forces with the owner of a local hair salon aptly named the "Barber of Seville." We'll let you figure out which opera the company is performing.

Michael Romeo is the owner of the salon in Richmond, Australia and the photo op with the singing barber, Jose Carbo, was great publicity for his new salon in Moonee Ponds, Australia. We also love his slogan, "Come get chopped at the Barber of Seville." If he ever opens a salon called "Sweeney Todd," he can keep his tagline.

The Opera Australia production of Rossini's opera is moving the action forward to the Roaring 20's with some amazing costumes and fun "Keystone Kops" action scenes. We last saw Carbo as the Barber at the Seattle Opera where he was sharing the role with fellow barihunk David Adam Moore and making his belated U.S. debut. Carbo, who is of Italian and Spanish heritage, was raised in Australia since childhood, so this performance is a return to his "hometown stage."

The opera also features barihunk Sam Dundas, who we recently showcased in some sexy, shirtless shots when he was performing Mozart's Cosi fan tutte. He'll be singing three small roles in the Barber: Fiorello, Ambrogio and the notary. [You don't want to miss those photos!].

John Brancy seductive as Guglielmo

Check out barihunk John Brancy and mezzo-soprano Wallis Giunta performing Dorabella and Guglielmo's seduction duet from Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte in Neumarkt, Germany. The two singers are participating in the International Meistersinger Akademie with coaches like sopranos Edith Wiens and Ann Murray, as well as pianist Malcolm Martineau. Also in the program is barihunk Tobias Greenhalgh.

If the two seem particularly cozy in this video it's because they are dating off-stage, so John's seduction skills as Guglielmo must be pretty convincing.

Here is Brancy performing Largo al factotum from Rossini's Barber of Seville, filmed at a final dress performance for a concert that was broadcast throughout Germany.

The International Meistersinger Akademie is a great opportunity for young singers to work with amazing coaches, but it is also a destination for European agents, promoters, opera directors and festival managers. These networking opportunities often provide a launching pad for young singers embarking on a European career.

Dominik Köninger Dresses Down for Bach

We love our readers for a million reasons, but mostly for the great photos that they send to us. Our best material comes from our readers, like this picture of Dominik Köninger perfoming Jesus in director Tobias Kratzer's current production of Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. John Passion (Johannespassionen) at the Värmland Opera in Karlstad, Sweden. The production also includes barihunk Johan Rydh as Pilatus and runs every Saturday until April 8th.

Köninger's career has taken off since he won First Prize at the Wigmore Hall/Kohn Foundation International Song Competition last year. On April 15-16, he joins conductor Christopher Hogwood, the Limburg Cathedral Boys Choir and the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra for performances of Mozart’s version of Handel’s Ode to St. Cecilia.

This year, Köninger will join the ensemble of Komische Oper Berlin in Berlin, where he will perform Guglielmo, Il Conte, Orfeo and Orest in Gluck's Iphigénie en Tauride. In 2013, he makes his debut as Guglielmo in Mozart's Cosi fan tutte at New National Theatre in Tokyo.

Köninger also just released his first recording, a performance of Orff’s Carmina Burana in the version for two pianos and percussion on SONY Classical. We've also learned about another proposed recording project that we'll post when have additional information.

Teddy Tahu Rhodes' Tattoo Becomes a Popular Search

We recently noticed that we were getting a lot of hits for a 2008 post about Teddy Tahu Rhodes showing off his tattoo to female reporter. When we explored why there was a sudden interest in his tattoo, we realized that he's been heavily tattooed for the current production of Mozart's "Così fan tutte" at the Washington National Opera.

The Jonathan Miller production runs through March 15th with a cast that also includes Elizabeth Futral, Renata Pokupic, Joel Prieto, William Shimell, and Christine Brandes. Visit the opera company's website to purchase tickets. The 6' 5" New Zealand barihunk received a nice mention from Tim Smith in the Baltimore Sun:

LA Times: "Ildebrando D'Arcangelo wants to be more than a pretty face"

The Los Angeles Times is featuring an article on Ildebrando D'Arcangelo that thoroughly covers his status as a reigning barihunk. Although the Italian singer denies that he's thought much about it, we think his recording company, agent and publicist have given it plenty of thought. On his IMG Artists website the three pull quotes have him variously described as a "hunk," having "presence" and "looks," and, finally, being "an unusually sexy Enrico."

Ildebrando D'Arcangelo: Trying hard to NOT look sexy

When Ildebrando D'Arcangelo storms the stage in Mozart's "Così fan Tutte" at Los Angeles Opera, the bass-baritone singer projects a swaggering confidence and dangerous sex appeal that act like a powerful audience magnet. But please don't call him a bari-hunk.

The 41-year-old D'Arcangelo, who is one of six members of the "Così" ensemble cast, has garnered fans around the world as much for his voice as for his model looks — tall, dark and handsome in an earthy way.

Yet the singer appears uneasy with references to his status as a bari-hunk — the group of opera stars known for their pecs and neck size, as well as their deep, sonorous voices.

"To be honest, I'm uncomfortable," said D'Arcangelo when the subject came up during a recent interview. "I appreciate it if people say something about looking good. In opera, if you see a beautiful person, it helps. But for me, honestly, I never thought about it." [Read entire article HERE]

Fans in California can catch him in Mozart's "Cosi fan tutte" at the Los Angeles Opera through October 8th. He then switches Mozart roles, tackling Don Giovanni at La Scala from December 16-28 before heading off to Weisbaden, Germany for a New Year's Day concert.

Matt Worth on Minnesota Public Radio talks and sings Cosi fan tutte

John Birge at the Minnesota Public Radio recently had Matt Worth on his program and his first question was about the singer's status as a barihunk. Fortunately for Worth, he didn't have to spend the whole interview talking about his looks. Fortunately for listeners, we are treated to him singing "Donna mie, la fate a tanti" from Mozart's "Cosi fan tutte," which Worth is performing at the Minnesota Opera.

Ildebrando D’Arcangelo Rocks the Pavilion in L.A.!!!

Italian barihunk has taken Los Angeles by storm with the following review in the L.A. Times that any singer would die for. You can read the entire review HERE:

“Così" begins with two overconfident youths, about to marry sisters and about to have their understanding of women tested. Ferrando sings a short line about his Dorabella, vowing that nothing could sway her faith...

Guglielmo echoes the sentiment. His Fiordiligi is honest as the day. Here Ildebrando D’Arcangelo revealed, in but seven sprightly measures of the score, an opulent bass-baritone with enough presence to rock the Pavilion.

That’s all it took to signal something special. The young cast of this “Così” is cause for celebration.

Hollywood Heartthrob: Ildebrando D'Arcangelo

Ildebrando D'Arcangelo: Shirtless and performing Cosi with Aleksandra Kurzak

If you're anywhere near the West Coast you'll know that there is a lot of baritone buzz going on. Most of it is centering on Thomas Hampson's performance in the 9/11 opera "Heart of a Soldier" at San Francisco Opera and the heartthrob Ildebrando D'Arcangelo taking on Guglielmo at the Los Angeles Opera. Now that "Heart of a Soldier" has opened attention is turning to Sunday's opening of "Cosi fan tutte" at the Los Angeles Opera. The all-star cast includes Aleksandra Kurzak, Ruxandra Dunose and Saimir Pirgu under the baton of James Conlon. Performances will run through October 8th and you can get tickets and additional production information HERE.We have to believe that someone in Hollywood has their eye on this potential matinee idol.

Teddy Tahu Rhodes as Don Giovanni

It's not often that we feature a singer two days in a row, but (A) it's a slow news day, and (B) why would we pass up an opportunity to post more pictures and a video of Teddy Tahu Rhodes?

Teddy Tahu Rhodes' return as the title character in Don Giovanni is big news in Australia, where his career was launched as the Don and Joseph de Rocher in "Dead Man Walking."

If you love Mozart then Opera Australia should be your destination in 2012. They are also performing the Magic Flute, Marriage of Figaro and Cosi fan tutte. All of the opera include barihunks, including Joshua Bloom, Luke Gabbedy and Sam Dundas.
