Bouli Lanners' coming-of-age tale gets a bit aimless in the middle – and that's no bad thing
The pint-sized protagonists of The Giants lounge at the lakeside with nothing to do. The world is too big, the summer too long, so they fill their days with teenage kicks: joyrides and alcohol, break-ins and getaways. Bouli Lanners' coming-of-age tale is a lovely drunken roll of a movie, brightly played by its adolescent cast, luxuriating in a Belgian countryside of whispering grass and fairytale forests. Even the tale's sagging, aimless middle section feels oddly of a piece. Lanners' feckless youths need an extended siesta ahead of their evening revels.
